What is sauerkraut – what can one jar in your fridge do for you?
Danielle Reed, Nutritionist, Flannerys Gymea
Sauerkraut is a form of fermented food primarily made from chopped cabbage that has been fermented by a number of lactic acid bacteria.
It has been a traditionally used food to assist with maintaining healthy gut bacteria for many generations and has recently come into fashion for its amazing health benefits…And for very good reason.
There are a number of amazing benefits that come with incorporating a small amount per day into your diet.
Sauerkraut is high in beneficial bacteria or ‘probiotics’, which can help to improve digestive ailments like bloating. Recent discoveries in research suggest that good gut health is one of the most important aspects of overall health from the immune system, to production of neurotransmitters for mental health.
Sauerkraut also benefits the gut because it is high in enzymes and fibre, both which support healthy digestion.
Sauerkraut is an awesome addition to any household. It is perfect for the whole family (sauerkraut juice/ liquid can be an awesome food source of probiotics for babies)
Just add 1-2 tablespoons on the side of any meal, or get creative and add it to salads, wraps or other cold dishes. There are heaps of different flavour combinations to suit your preference. One of our favourites is Peace Love Vegetables Green – so full of goodness plus it’s delicious!
