Nappy Rash, Lack of Sleep, Cracked Nipples = New Mum Challenges…

By Joanna Hawkins BHSc Nutritional Medicine, Flannerys Organic & Wholefood Market

Being a new mum is an exciting and transitioning time. Throughout pregnancy a woman’s body experiences many physiological changes and it takes some time postpartum to adapt and adjust to these changes. You and your bub may be faced with concerns such as nappy rash, lack of sleep or cracked nipples. Below are some tips to help with facing the challenges you may be experiencing. Plus we highly encourage you to come in store and chat with our team including our qualified Naturopath’s for all of your mum and bubba advice.

Nappy Rash

Nappy rash can be irritable and sore for your baby’s skin. Possible prevention is best by keeping the nappy area clean and dry. The use of a barrier cream such as Weleda Calendula Nappy Change Cream helps to prevent nappy rash, the ingredients lanolin and zinc oxide act to form a barrier against excessive moisture and organic calendula and chamomile extracts assist in soothing the skin. If your little one has developed nappy rash Weleda Rash Relief Cream is a herbal product for the treatment of skin rashes such as nappy rash.

Lack of sleep

Lack of sleep is a common concern for new mums and can be difficult to address as your new bub may be keeping you on your toes all day and awake for many hours of the night. As a nutritionist one of my tips on combating lack of sleep for new mums is to ensure you are fueling your body with a variety of wholefoods such as grains, fruits, vegetables, protein rich and fibre rich foods. This way you’re providing your body with a wide range of vitamins and nutrients that it needs for optimal energy and function. Also ensure that you’re reducing your intake of high sugary foods and caffeine, both can be stimulating and prevent you from sleeping when you need too. There are a range of homeopathic products that are super gentle for bubba that may assist in helping to calm baby for sleep. We love the Brauer’s range, speak with our in store Naturopaths about the best products for you and baby.

Cracked nipples

Breastfeeding is a new and challenging experience for mums. Sore or cracked nipples are a common concern that many women face. There are many causes for sore or cracked nipples so it’s important to speak to your health care provider or a breastfeeding consultant to help find the cause for these concerns. Weleda Nipple Care Cream may assist in providing soothing relief. Containing Aloe Vera, marshmallow and natural plant oils Weleda Nipple Care Cream provides moisturising benefits and relief.

There are many remedies to help with all symptoms you can face as a new mum and we want you to know that you are not alone. Come in and speak with our friendly team for advice and support.
