How to keep your child’s immune system healthy

By Anita Tarlinton, Flannerys Naturopath, Maroochydore

Our immune system acts as our ‘internal army’ that fights off viruses and invading pathogens. Poor nutrition, stress and inadequate sleep contribute to a weakened immune system.

How to keep your child’s immune system healthy

Vitamin A, C, E, zinc and iron are important nutrients for a healthy immune system. Including quality protein sources and a variety of fruits and vegetables into the diet will help meet the daily nutrient requirement. Aim to include 3 – 4 colours for each meal. Ensuring your child is drinking plenty of water, getting sufficient sleep and moving their bodies daily will also support immune function.

Involving children in the cooking process is a good way to spark their interest and will help them become more adventurous with trying new foods. Avoid highly processed and sugar filled foods.
