Fun ideas for kids in the kitchen

School holidays are here! And that means you’ll need plenty of fun activities to keep the kids entertained. While the warmer months are great for outdoor fun, winter is the perfect opportunity to invite them into the kitchen to get creative. Learning about healthy food from a young age can help develop a lifelong interest in wellbeing, as well as an understanding of where our food comes from. Here, we share some fun school holiday ideas that may help inspire your kids to become the next junior Masterchef!

Cookie cutter fruits

Jazz up a fruit salad by cutting fruit in fun cookie cutter shapes. Soft fruits such as kiwi, honeydew melon and watermelon work well. It’s a great way to feed the kids more fruit and they’ll love eating their creations dipped in some Flannerys Own creamy nut butter.

Easy hummus

If your child is too young for cooking with heat, make some easy hummus together that requires no cooking. Hummus is a great snack with chopped vegetable sticks, savoury crackers or some Flannerys Own corn chips.

Simply blend the following ingredients together until smooth:

  • 200g organic chickpeas, canned
  • ¼ cup Flannerys Own organic hulled tahini
  • 2 tbsp Flannerys Own organic olive oil
  • 2 organic garlic cloves, skins removed
  • Juice of 1 organic lemon
  • ½ tsp organic ground cumin

Eggplant mini pizzas

All kids love pizza and these mini eggplant versions are no exception. They’re simple to make and delightful to eat!

  • Flannerys Own organic olive oil
  • 1 large eggplant, cut into 1-2cm thick slices
  • Organic pizza sauce
  • Vegetable toppings of your choice, e.g. fresh tomato, basil
  • Grated cheese (vegan cheese if required)

Coat the eggplant slices in olive oil on both sides and bake in a 200C oven for 6-8 minutes, turning once. Spread 1 tbsp of pizza sauce on each slice, arrange vegetable toppings, then coat with cheese and bake until the cheese is melted and golden.
